Day 3

Another Bermudiful day.... following a good night's sleep, we readied for breakfast and discussed the activities for the day. First off was to Walsingham Park, where we got to hike, learn about how the caves are such a part of Bermuda's natural environment. The flora and fauna of the park is different that other spots on the Island, such as the natural all-spice plant. Our hike first took us to Blue Hole, where we were able to jump off the two cliffs into the water... of note (every single student jumped in) the first time that has happened on a trip. All of the students encouraged each other and even jumped off multiple times. As we headed from spot to spot, we saw so many incredible sights and even were able to go into a couple of caves. In our last cave, we got to swim! The water was so clear and it was incredible to swim in the cave while learning about how the stalagmites and stalactites are created and continue to grow.

After a great lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries... it was then off to Fort St. Catherine for some swimming, snorkeling, foraging for sea glass, and more. We saw a nice size barracuda, lots of needle fish, huge West Indian Topshells, squid, and more! While some remained in the water exploring, a couple of the weary folks decided to rest on the white sand.

A fantastic lecture from Kaitlin about the structure of the island and the connection to the plants and animals. We learned about how Bermuda was created and the evolution over thousands of years and how climate change will affect the island. Not only did we discuss Pangaea and continental drift, we learned a lot about volcanoes and how many islands were created. Kaitlin also showed us some seeds and types of sand and soil that we will see throughout the res of the week on the island. Immediately after the lecture, it was off to bed to rest up for another great day of exploring!
