Day one

Welcome to our journey to Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science and the wonderful island only a 2 hour plane ride away!
We eagerly departed Chamberlain at 5:30 A.M. in order to try and avoid the loathsome Boston rush hour traffic. Arriving approximately two and a half hours for our flight helped to ease everyone's anxiety giving us plenty of leeway to take our time. After a light morning snack and much needed caffeine, we boarded a not so full plane and were able to move around a bit. The flight was quite smooth and we actually arrived 25 minutes early making the check in at immigration very easy. All our bags made it with us... a definite plus... and we found two taxis to take us over to the Bio-Station. Unloading bags and heading into Wright Hall went smoothly, too and we assembled for a quick orientation meeting and tour. The BIOS food service staff had already put out some lunch and snacks for us to enjoy before heading over to Whalebone Bay for some snorkel practice. Our lovely BIOS Ocean Academy Education staff, Kyla took us on a scenic and informative walk down the Railway Trail. The warm weather walk was a wee bit different than our chilly morning. Even in Bermuda the water temperature in October is still as warm as Massachusetts in August... so in we went! Kyla helped all of the students get situated with their gear and then we snorkeled over some awesome corals, which were loaded with fishes and other aquatic species like the protected West Indian Top Shell.

After our snorkel practice, we took the nice walk back to BIOS for a great pasta dinner with a choice of red or white sauce including some tasty chicken followed by ice cream. Even though the group was beat from the long day, we headed over to the Rikker Room in the library for an awesome lecture on fish identification delivered by Kaitlin, the Director of Ocean Academy. We learned at ton of new information to help us get a keener sense of what we will be seeing in the upcoming days. Off to bed to prepare for another fun-filled, exciting day!
